International Wire with Incorrect Bank Information

Hello, I initiated a wire transfer of $20,000 USD from my Canadian TD Bank account to my U.S. bank account at BECU on September 6th. Unfortunately, I mistakenly listed Wells Fargo as the beneficiary bank instead of the intermediary bank, although all other details, including the recipient and account number, were correct. Over a month has passed, and I still haven’t received the funds in my U.S. bank account, nor has the wire been returned to my TD account.

I contacted TD Bank, and they confirmed that the money was sent to Wells Fargo on September 6th. They also submitted a request to amend or cancel the wire, but Wells Fargo stated they couldn’t return the funds without a “debit authorization” from the wire recipient. I reached out to Wells Fargo, but they wouldn’t provide any information regarding the wire since I don’t have an account with them, and BECU also has no information about it.

Is there anything I can do in this situation, or is the money lost? I’m particularly concerned because the account number at Wells Fargo matches my BECU account number exactly; when I provided my BECU number during my call with Wells Fargo, it was recognized as a valid Wells Fargo account number.

Hey, Reach out to TD Bank again to request a follow-up on the wire transfer status and emphasize the urgency of the situation.

Hello, Contact Wells Fargo’s wire transfer department and request to speak with a supervisor for more detailed information or assistance.

Hey, File a complaint with the CFPB by submitting a formal request to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to escalate the issue.

Hey, Keep a detailed record of all communications, including calls, emails, and correspondence with both banks for future reference.

Hello, Consult a financial advisor or attorney to seek professional advice on any legal options available for recovering the funds.
