How "Extensive" Is an Extensive Background Check?

Hey folks…

I’m in the process of applying for a teller position at one of my local banks, and I’ve been told that the background check can take about a week. I’m curious about what “extensive” actually means in this context and how much time they spend digging into your history.

For instance, if I wrote on my resume that I graduated with a 3.5 GPA but it’s actually more like a 3.3, is that something they’re really going to scrutinize? My understanding is that they’re more concerned with verifying the years you attended and that you earned the degree you claimed.

I’m not trying to hide anything major—no criminal history or anything like that. My education and employment history are all accurate. But I can’t help but feel a bit uneasy because I’m not exactly sure how in-depth this background check will be or what they’re really focusing on.

If anyone has experience with bank background checks, especially for teller positions, I’d really appreciate your insights. How long did your background check take, and what kind of details did they focus on?

You are all terrible people, doing a job that’s not real. How do you sleep knowing that your work is just tracking other adults? It’s a sad and pathetic way to make a living.

An “extensive” background check mainly verifies your employment, education, and checks for any criminal history. They’re more concerned with the big stuff, like confirming you earned your degree, not minor GPA differences. If everything’s accurate, you should be good. Background checks usually take about a week.
