Best checking accounts... who offers them?

I’ve been with BofA for over 10 years. Thinking of switching to Chase, Capital One, or maybe another option. What do you all think? Open to any advice.

Best really depends on what you need and how you use your account.

I was with BOA for 30 years and switched to Capital One for checking and savings. It’s been great—no need to worry about fees, and the app and website are way better than BOA. Only downside is if you need a physical branch.

@Nori
I use both, but I find the Capital One app isn’t as good. Depends on what features you need, I guess.

Maybe it’s because I was using bill pay for my BOA credit cards. It was a hassle, and I had to do it through their site instead of the app.

@Nori
Really? I have my BOA credit cards linked to my app. They show up under checking accounts, and I can pay them directly without using bill pay. Maybe it was something to do with how your accounts were set up.

@Danice
Could be! Or maybe it was when I tried setting up auto pay… or using the site instead of the app? Anyway, glad it’s working out for you.

@Danice
Are the credit cards with BOA easy for getting credit limit increases?

If you’re paying fees every month, it’s time to switch. I like Capital One, and I don’t even have a branch nearby.

Capital One 360 gets a lot of hate, but I like it. The app is easy to use, but it’s all down to what you prefer.

Same here! I’m happy with Capital One, especially for the interest rates. Much better than my old credit union.

I had BofA for over a decade but switched to Wells Fargo because of a good sign-up bonus. The requirements were easy to meet. I still need a physical branch, and it’s the closest one to me. Chase seems nice too, but none are nearby. Some folks rave about Capital One, but I don’t like relying on CVS for cash or check deposits.

@TaylorWealthAdvisor
You can deposit checks using your phone. Even if I had a local branch, I’d still just use my phone.

@TaylorWealthAdvisor
Wells Fargo changed my account without asking, added a $25/month fee. Nope, I’m out. Went to a credit union instead.

Which type of account? Their standard checking just needs $500 daily or $1500 direct deposit a month to avoid fees.

@TaylorWealthAdvisor
Didn’t bother checking. Saw the fee in the email, tried calling a few times, no answer. Instead, I went to a local credit union. Got:

  • No fees
  • ATM fee reimbursement
  • 5.0% APY on up to $25k.

Bye, WF.

@Bailey
Sounds like a sweet deal! Your credit union came through.

So far, so good.

I prefer local community banks. They treat customers better. I’m with Navy Federal Credit Union and love it.

Chase is solid, but needing to make an appointment just to talk to someone is a hassle. I work at a smaller bank, and anyone can walk in whenever. The app is great, though, and I have a student account, so it’s free. Also have their Sapphire card for travel points.
