Why did Bank of America put my money order check on hold?

Like many, I’ve got bills and rent to pay, so I went to deposit a $400 money order yesterday. The teller assured me it would be in my account by today.

But now I’ve got an email from Bank of America saying my check is on hold until 9/7. This is so frustrating—I needed that money for rent, and now I’m at risk of losing my place. I even made sure to ask if it would be available today because I wanted to avoid this exact situation.

I really hope the money clears today. If not, this will definitely be the last time I bank with them.

Hey Shalom, The hold on your money order might have happened due to several reasons one of the reasons could be due to verification processes, especially if it’s a larger deposit than usual or if the bank needs to confirm the authenticity of the money order.

Hello, Banks sometimes place holds to prevent potential fraud or errors, which can lead to delays in accessing the funds. Bank of America will definitely release your money, kindly i urge to be patient in the meantime.

Hello Shalom, on the other hand the teller gave you the information she believed was accurate when she processed your deposit. However, the hold was placed by the automated system afterward, which she wouldn’t have known about. If she had seen any prompts for a hold during the deposit, she would have informed you.

Hello, I know this is very frustrating but I will provide a solution for you,

  • Contact the Bank Immediately: Call or visit your bank and explain your situation. Ask if they can expedite the release of the funds, especially since you were told it would be available sooner.
  • Request a Temporary Credit: Some banks may offer a temporary credit while they verify the funds. Explain that you need the money for rent and ask if they can provide this option.

Hello, This is very frustrating but since it is the Bank of America, i know some of the few solutions that can be really of help to you:
Escalate if Needed: If the bank isn’t helpful, consider escalating the issue to a manager or filing a complaint. Let them know how this situation is impacting you.
Talk to Your Landlord: Let your landlord know about the delay and provide proof of the hold. Many landlords will work with you if they know the money is coming.
