I’m considering using money orders for a few transactions and I’m trying to budget accordingly. Could anyone provide insights into the typical fees for purchasing money orders at different locations such as banks, post offices, or retail stores? Are there any additional charges I should be aware of?
Money order fees can vary based on where you buy them, typically ranging from $1 to $3 each.
Common Places to Purchase Money Orders:
- Post Offices: Generally offer competitive rates and are widely accessible.
- Banks: Often have higher fees compared to other sources.
- Retail Stores: Convenience stores, grocery stores, and drugstores offer money orders with varying fees.
- Check Cashing Stores: May provide money orders but usually at higher fees.
Additional Charges:
- Replacement Fees: If you lose a money order, there may be a fee to replace it.
- International Money Orders: Typically come with higher fees than domestic ones.
To keep costs down, it’s a good idea to compare fees at different locations before buying a money order.
Yep, cashiers checks are $5 at my credit union. We don’t do money orders. Check fee is waived for our highest depositors/private clients and generally anyone who is nice to me.
