My wife wrote a check from a checkless banking account, and it cleared. What should we expect to happen next?

My wife recently wrote me a check for $5,800 to cover her share of wedding venue costs. She has a checkless checking account, which she wasn’t aware of, and now her bank, Bank of America, has notified her that the check is invalid and will be returned.

Here’s the situation: The check cleared and I immediately transferred the funds to a high-yield savings account at a different bank. Two days later, Bank of America informed her that the check cannot be processed due to her account’s limitations. Her account still shows the $5,800, and I have the same amount in my savings account, but it’s no longer available in my checking account.

What should I expect to happen next? Will Bank of America attempt to pull the funds back from my PNC checking account? If so, I won’t have the money available and could end up overdrawing my account. I’d prefer not to move the funds back into my checking account in anticipation of this. My wife has reached out to Bank of America but hasn’t received clear answers yet. Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks.

She might have previously had checks that needed to be destroyed if the account was changed from a checkbook to a checkless one after it was opened. If there’s a sub-product move, my bank experiences anything similar.

If I was you I would be worried about a negative credit since the account will eventually be debited for the returned item. Also expect to soon start getting collection calls for the overdrawn account
