Forgot to sign a check but still got the cash. Should I be worried?

I forgot to sign the back of a check when I gave it to the teller, but I still got the cash. Is this going to be a problem, or is everything fine?

If the check was made out to you, it’s probably nothing to worry about. It’s rare for anyone to catch it after the fact.

Nothing will likely happen. If anyone notices, the teller might just get a reminder from their manager to check for endorsements next time.

I run a bank, and we don’t require endorsements for deposits under $2500. Honestly, it’s not something banks care about much anymore.

Insurance checks are a different story. Some companies, like State Farm, are known for returning checks without endorsements.

@Edward
I’ve been in banking for 19 years, and I’ve never seen a check returned for no endorsement unless it’s a third-party check. If it’s made out to you, it should be fine.

Insurance claim checks are stricter. I’ve been in banking for over 40 years, and they definitely get returned for missing endorsements, especially with certain companies.

It’s usually not your bank returning it. It’s the insurance company’s bank doing it. They check endorsements closely, especially if multiple signatures are required.

@Edward
Insurance companies love denying payouts for any reason they can find.

Yep, this happens all the time with claim checks.

Hoping I never have to deal with it, but I know it’s inevitable.

I deposited a check over $50k without endorsing it. Just snapped a picture and done.

It’s probably fine and won’t get reviewed. How much was the check for?

About $1900. But it’s an insurance check, so I’m a little nervous. Should I go back and check with the bank?

@Chen
Was the check made out just to you? If it wasn’t also made out to a bank or another party, you’re probably good. Insurance checks can be tricky, but tons of unendorsed checks go through without issues.

@Charlie
Yeah, it was just made out to me.

You’re probably fine, but insurance checks can get flagged. There’s a small chance it could get sent back, and the money would be pulled from your account. If that happens, you’ll either need to re-sign it or ask the insurance company for a new check.

If you’re really worried, just talk to the bank manager. They’ll be able to check for you and let you know if there’s anything to be concerned about.

Why not just go back and sign it now?

It’s probably already scanned and destroyed.

@Chen
If it’s an insurance check, it might get sent back for missing the endorsement. They don’t mess around with claim checks.
