Dash in my account number – should I use it?

I opened my credit union account online, and I noticed my account number has dashes, like this: “XXX-XXX-XXXXXXXXXXX.” I’ve never seen this with my other bank accounts before, so it caught me off guard.

If I want to set up direct deposit, add an external bank account, or set up autopay, do I need to include the dashes?

You can just ignore the dash.

The dashes are just there to make it easier to read. You don’t need to include them.

Ignore the dashes. Some credit unions show a separate ‘electronic transfers’ number, but if you don’t see that, just use the account number without the dashes.

Some banking systems display dashes, but you can leave them out when setting up autopay.

It’s just for readability. ‘100004655’ is harder to read than ‘100-004-655.’ Feel free to ignore the dashes.

Banks and credit unions do things differently, but the dashes are just for show. Don’t include them for direct deposit.

I use a credit union, not a bank. Know the difference.
